Planning a Rishikesh Day Trip from Delhi

A Rishikesh day trip from Delhi covers two holy towns on the Ganges in one private day. In Haridwar, you walk Har Ki Pauri, the main bathing ghat (steps leading down to the river). In Rishikesh, you see Ram Jhula (jhula means a footbridge over the Ganges), Parmarth Niketan, the Laxman Jhula area, and Triveni Ghat. The day ends in Haridwar with the Ganga Aarti (an evening prayer ceremony with lamps and songs).

This is our longest day tour: about 18–19 hours from pickup to drop-off. We pick you up at about 5:00 AM anywhere in Delhi NCR (the Delhi region, including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad). You get back between about 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM. About 10 hours of the day is the drive to and from Delhi, mostly on the Delhi–Meerut Expressway (a fast toll highway heading northeast out of Delhi).

If you have the time, staying one night in Haridwar or Rishikesh is easier for most people. This day tour suits travelers with only one free day who want to see the aarti and are fine with a late return.

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • Car only: Choose this if you like to explore at your own pace. Your driver takes you to each stop and waits, but does not guide you around the ghats.
  • A guide package: Choose this for a first visit. Your guide explains the aarti and the stories behind each place, and helps you find a good spot on the steps. The ghats and bridges on this route have no entry ticket, so a tickets package helps most if you add a ropeway temple.

What can change the price: the number of people, very busy dates such as festivals and long weekends, and any extra stops you add.

No advance payment, and you can cancel at any time. Pay on the day by cash, card, or UPI (India’s instant phone payment system).

What's Included and What's Not

Entry and ropeway tickets are included only in the two ticket packages. Car-only bookings and the Car + Guide package do not include them. Most stops on this route have no ticket anyway.

  • Private AC car and driver: The car is yours for the whole day, with no other guests.
  • Fuel, toll tax, state taxes, and parking: Toll tax is a road fee paid at highway booths. State taxes are fees for a tourist car entering another state. All are in the price.
  • Pickup and drop-off: At your hotel, home, railway station, or the airport in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, or Faridabad.
  • Stops on the way: Restroom stops in both directions, and a breakfast stop if you want one.
  • Guide, tickets, and lunch: Only in the matching package.
  • Meals: Breakfast and dinner on the road, and lunch unless you book the lunch package.
  • Entry and ropeway tickets (car only and Car + Guide): You pay at the counter only if you add a ropeway temple.
  • Guide on car-only bookings: Available for an extra charge. Ask us on WhatsApp for the guide price.
  • Offerings and donations at the aarti: Always your choice, never required.
  • River rafting and other activities: These are not part of this day tour.
  • Camera or video fees: Only if a place asks for one.
  • Tips and personal expenses: Tips for your driver and guide, and any shopping, are up to you.

Itinerary for Your Delhi to Rishikesh Same Day Tour

We see Haridwar briefly in the morning, spend the middle of the day in Rishikesh, and return to Haridwar for the aarti at sunset. This order saves the best part of the day for the end, so nothing feels rushed.

5:00 AM — Pickup in Delhi NCR

Your driver meets you at your hotel and heads east to the Delhi–Meerut Expressway. The early start gets you out of the city before traffic builds. Most guests sleep for the first part of the drive.

6:30 AM — Breakfast and Restroom Stop

A highway stop of about 30 minutes. Have breakfast if you want it (you pay for it), or just use the restroom and stretch your legs.

10:00 AM — Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar

Har Ki Pauri is one of the holiest places on the Ganges for Hindus. In the morning, you see pilgrims bathing in the fast, cold river and families offering flowers. You spend about 45 minutes here, then drive about 1 hour to Rishikesh.

12:00 PM — Ram Jhula and Parmarth Niketan

Ram Jhula is a long footbridge over the Ganges, busy with walkers and pilgrims. Close to it is Parmarth Niketan, a large ashram (a place for prayer, study, and yoga) with gardens and its own ghat. You spend about 1 hour here.

1:00 PM — Lunch

Lunch takes about 1 hour. With the lunch package, you eat at a 3-star hotel from its set menu. Otherwise, you choose where to eat. All food in Rishikesh is vegetarian.

2:00 PM — Laxman Jhula Area and Cafes

This lively area has small temples, shops, and cafes with river views. The old Laxman Jhula footbridge has been closed for repairs in recent years, so this stop is the area around it. You spend about 1.25 hours here, a good time for coffee and a rest.

3:30 PM — Triveni Ghat

Triveni Ghat is a wide, open ghat on the Rishikesh riverfront, popular with local families. Its name means “meeting of three rivers.” You spend about 30 minutes here, then drive about 1 hour back to Haridwar.

5:15 PM — Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri

Priests wave large brass lamps over the river while bells ring and the crowd sings. Many people float small leaf boats with flowers and a lamp. You spend about 1–1.5 hours here, including time to find a place on the steps.

Season note: The aarti starts at sunset, about 5:30 PM in winter and about 7:00 PM in summer. In winter, we may leave Rishikesh a little earlier so you reach the ghat in time. In summer, you get more time in Rishikesh.

6:30 PM (Winter) or 8:00 PM (Summer) — Drive Back to Delhi

The drive back takes about 5 hours. Your driver stops for a restroom break, and for dinner if you want it (you pay for dinner). Most guests sleep on the way.

11:30 PM–12:30 AM — Drop-off in Delhi NCR

Your driver takes you back to your hotel, home, or the airport. In summer, the later aarti can mean getting back closer to 1:00 AM.

Times can change with traffic, weather, and crowds at the ghats.

Important to Know Before You Go

Read these points before you book. They cover the rules and conditions that most often surprise first-time visitors.

  • No closed day: The ghats are open every day, and the aarti takes place every evening. Weekends and festival days are much busier, and weekend traffic near Haridwar can add about 1 hour.
  • Passport: Carry your passport or a clear copy for any ID checks on the way.
  • Dress and shoes: Wear modest clothes that cover your shoulders and knees at the ghats and temples. You take your shoes off on the ghat steps.
  • Things not to bring: Rishikesh bans alcohol and meat, so please do not carry them. Keep valuables to a minimum in the crowds.
  • Weather: In December and January, thick fog can slow the drive early in the morning and late at night. In the monsoon (July to September), the river runs high and fast.

Customize Your Day

The basic plan suits most travelers, but you can change it. Tell us what you want when you message us, and we will confirm the timing.

  • Add Mansa Devi or Chandi Devi temple: These hilltop temples in Haridwar are reached by ropeway (a cable car). Adding one adds about 1.5–2 hours, so you get back later.
  • Add a guide to a car-only booking: An English-speaking guide can join you for an extra charge. Ask us on WhatsApp for the guide price.
  • Add lunch: Pick the lunch package for lunch at a 3-star hotel, on the hotel’s set menu.
  • Choose a roomier car: With about 10 hours of driving, an Innova Crysta gives more legroom than a sedan. Groups of 7–12 can take a Tempo Traveller.
  • Prefer a shorter temple day? Our Mathura Vrindavan Day Tour visits Krishna temples and is a shorter drive from Delhi.

Who This Haridwar Ganga Aarti Day Trip Suits

This day works well for some travelers and is too much for others. Here is an honest guide. For most people, an overnight stay is easier.

  • Short-stay visitors: If you have one free day in Delhi and want to see the aarti, this is a practical way to do it. Avoid booking an early flight or tour for the next morning.
  • Couples and solo travelers: A private car means you set the pace at each stop. Solo travelers, including solo women, have the same driver all day and never share the car.
  • Families with older children: Teens usually enjoy the bridges, cafes, and the aarti. For small children, a day this long is often too tiring.
  • Older travelers: You sit for about 10 hours, and the ghats have many steps. Unless you are comfortable with both, an overnight stay is the kinder choice.
  • Pilgrims and Indian families: You can bathe at Har Ki Pauri in the morning and stay for the full aarti, with a fair price per car.

Best Time to Visit Haridwar and Rishikesh from Delhi

You can do this trip all year, but the season changes the day a lot. Here is what each one means for you.

  • October to March (best months): Days of about 20–30°C (68–86°F) suit walking the ghats. In December and January, evenings at the ghat drop to about 10°C (50°F), and fog can slow the drive.
  • April to June (hot): Days reach about 40°C (104°F) by May and June. Carry water and a hat, and expect the hottest hours around lunch in Rishikesh.
  • July to September (monsoon): Expect heavy rain and a high, fast river. In July or August, the Kanwar Yatra (a large pilgrimage to Haridwar) can close parts of the highway for about two weeks, so ask us before choosing dates.
  • Best days and season for the aarti: Weekdays have lighter traffic and smaller crowds. Winter gives an earlier aarti and an earlier return. Summer gives more time in Rishikesh but a later night.

How Long Is the Drive from Delhi to Rishikesh?

By private car, Delhi to Haridwar takes about 4.5–5 hours each way, and Rishikesh is about 1 hour farther. The distance is about 230–250 km (143–155 miles) each way, mostly on the Delhi–Meerut Expressway.

OptionTime each wayComfortWho it suits
Private carAbout 4.5 – 5 hours to Haridwar, door to doorStops when you need them; the car waits through the aartiOne-day visitors, families, older travelers
TrainAbout 4 – 5 hours to Haridwar on faster trains, plus a taxi to RishikeshGood seats and a smooth ride; check that your train home leaves after the aartiTravelers staying one night or more
BusAbout 6 – 7 hoursLowest cost; longer, with fewer stops you chooseBudget travelers with time to stay over

Trains and buses are good, low-cost ways to reach Haridwar if you stay the night. For a same-day round trip, the hard part is the evening: the aarti ends after dark, and you still need to get back to Delhi. A private car waits for you and takes you to your door.

Local Tips for the Ghats and the Long Drive

These small things make the day easier. Most of them are about the evening at Har Ki Pauri, the busiest part of the day.

  • Reach the ghat about 45 minutes early: On weekends and festival days, the best steps fill fast. Cars park a short walk away, so agree on a meeting point with your driver before you walk in.
  • Say a calm “no, thank you” to “blessings”: Some people offer to bless you, tie a thread on your wrist, or mark your forehead, then ask for money. You can smile, say no, and walk on. Any offering is your choice.
  • Carry small notes and a bag for your shoes: Shoes come off at the ghat, so a cloth bag helps. Keep ₹10, ₹20, and ₹50 notes for the shoe stand, a leaf boat, or a cup of tea.
  • Stay on the upper steps: The river at Har Ki Pauri is fast and cold. If you dip your feet, hold the iron chains along the edge, and keep children close in the crowd.
  • Eat vegetarian, shop where you like: Rishikesh is vegetarian, with no alcohol for sale, and its cafes are good for a rest. We never stop at shops unless you ask, and you choose where to buy.

FAQ: About Your Haridwar and Rishikesh Day

These are the questions travelers usually ask before booking this day. If yours is not here, send it to us on WhatsApp.

How long is the Rishikesh day trip from Delhi?

The full day takes about 18–19 hours, from a 5:00 AM pickup to a drop-off between about 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM. About 10 hours of that is the drive to and from Delhi. It is our longest day tour, so for most people, staying one night in Haridwar or Rishikesh is easier.

What time is the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri?

The Ganga Aarti starts at sunset, about 5:30 PM in winter and about 7:00 PM in summer. Finding a good place on the steps takes time, so we plan about 1–1.5 hours at the ghat. On weekends and festival days, try to arrive about 45 minutes before it starts.

How much does the Delhi to Rishikesh day tour cost?

Car-only prices start at ₹7,000 per car for a sedan (1–3 people) and go up to ₹17,000 per car for a Tempo Traveller (7–12 people). Guide packages cost ₹7,000–₹8,000 per person. Every price includes the private car, driver, fuel, toll tax, state taxes, parking, and pickup and drop-off in Delhi NCR.

Do I have to pay in advance?

No. There is no advance payment, and you can cancel at any time. You pay on the day of the tour by cash, card, or UPI. Since nothing is paid before the trip, you lose nothing if your flight changes, you feel unwell, or your plans change.

Is there a closed day for this tour?

No. The ghats and bridges are open every day, and the Ganga Aarti takes place every evening, so you can book any day of the week. Weekdays are calmer. Weekends and festival days bring bigger crowds at the aarti, and weekend traffic near Haridwar can add about 1 hour.

Are entry tickets included?

Entry and ropeway tickets are included only in the two ticket packages. Car-only bookings and the Car + Guide package do not include them. Most stops on this route, like the ghats and bridges, have no ticket. You need one mainly if you add the Mansa Devi or Chandi Devi ropeway.

Will the driver take us to shops?

No. We never take you to a shop unless you ask, and your driver will not push you to buy anything. If you want souvenirs or prayer beads in Rishikesh or Haridwar, tell your driver. You choose where to go and what to buy.
