What Your Agra Fatehpur Sikri Tour from Delhi Looks Like

Our Agra Fatehpur Sikri tour from Delhi covers three Mughal sites in one private day: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri. The Mughals were emperors who ruled much of India from the 1500s to the 1800s. Fatehpur Sikri is the red sandstone city Emperor Akbar built as his capital.

This is a long day. Your driver picks you up at about 6:00 AM and drops you back at about 10:00 PM, so plan for about 16 hours. Close to 9 hours of that is in the car, mostly on the Yamuna Expressway (a fast, six-lane highway between Delhi and Agra).

To fit Fatehpur Sikri in, this tour skips three smaller Agra stops: Itmad-ud-Daulah (the “Baby Taj”), Mehtab Bagh (a garden across the river with a view of the Taj Mahal), and Sikandra (Akbar’s Tomb). Want more of Agra and less road? Our Same Day Agra Tour from Delhi may suit you better.

Itinerary for Your Delhi Agra Fatehpur Sikri Same Day Tour

The day starts early so you reach the Taj Mahal before the midday heat. Agra Fort is close by, so it comes next. Fatehpur Sikri is the farthest point, so it comes last, and the drive home starts from there.

6:00 AM — Pickup from Your Hotel

Your driver meets you at your hotel with the car ready. Bring your passport, water, and a light layer for the AC. Leaving at this hour gets you out of Delhi before the morning traffic builds.

About 7:30 AM — Breakfast and Restroom Stop

Your driver stops at a food plaza on the expressway. Have breakfast if you want it, or just use the restroom and stretch your legs. About 30 minutes.

About 9:45 AM — Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is a white marble tomb that Emperor Shah Jahan built in the 1600s for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Cars must park away from the gate, so expect a short walk or electric shuttle ride to the entrance. Inside, you pass through the red sandstone main gate, walk the long gardens, and climb onto the marble platform. About 2.5 hours, including the security line.

12:30 PM — Agra Fort

Agra Fort is a huge red sandstone fort that Emperor Akbar began in 1565. Inside are white marble palaces that Shah Jahan added later. From the terraces, you can see the Taj Mahal along the river, the same view Shah Jahan had when his son held him here as a prisoner. About 1.5 hours.

2:00 PM — Lunch in Agra

With the lunch package, you eat at a 3-star hotel from its set menu. Without it, tell your driver what food you like, then choose where to eat and pay for yourself. About 45 minutes.

3:00 PM — Drive to Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is about 40 km (25 miles) west of Agra. The road leaves the city and passes small towns and farmland. About 1 hour, a good time to rest.

4:00 PM — Fatehpur Sikri, Buland Darwaza, and Jama Masjid

Fatehpur Sikri is the red sandstone city Emperor Akbar built in the late 1500s, his capital for only about 14 years. You walk through palace courtyards like Panch Mahal, a five-story open pavilion. Then you visit the Jama Masjid, a large mosque entered through Buland Darwaza, the giant gateway at Fatehpur Sikri. In its courtyard stands the white marble tomb of Salim Chishti, a Sufi saint (a holy man of a mystical Muslim tradition). About 1.5 hours.

Season note: In December and January, the sun sets at about 5:30 PM, and the site closes at sunset. On foggy mornings the whole day runs later, so your time here may be shorter.

5:30 PM — Drive Back to Delhi

The drive back takes about 4–4.5 hours, with a restroom stop on the way. The stop is usually at an expressway food court, so you can pick up a simple dinner. Many travelers nap on this stretch.

About 10:00 PM — Drop-off at Your Hotel

Your driver drops you at your hotel, home, or the airport. Areas near the expressway, like Noida, are reached a little earlier.

Times can change with traffic, weather, and lines at the gate.

Important to Know Before You Go

These five points can change your day. Please read them before you pick a date.

  • Closed on Fridays: The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. Please pick any day except Friday. Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are open every day.
  • Passport: Foreign visitors need a passport to buy tickets at the foreign-visitor rate. Carry the original, not just a photo of it.
  • Dress and shoes at the Jama Masjid: Cover your shoulders and knees. You must take off your shoes in the mosque area, so wear shoes that slip on and off easily.
  • Items not allowed: Food, tripods, drones, large bags, and lighters or tobacco are not allowed inside the Taj Mahal. Leave them in the car with your driver.
  • Winter fog: In December and January, heavy morning fog can cover the Yamuna Expressway. Your driver slows down for safety, so the day may run an hour or two later.

Customize Your Day

The plan above works for most travelers, but it is your car and your day. Here are a few easy changes you can ask for.

  • Add a guide to a car-only booking: An English-speaking guide can join you for an extra charge. Ask us on WhatsApp for the guide price.
  • Add lunch: Choose the lunch package for a set-menu meal at a 3-star hotel, or eat wherever you like and pay there.
  • Start earlier: A pickup before 6:00 AM gives you more time at Fatehpur Sikri, which helps most in winter when the site closes early.
  • Want a shorter day in Agra? Skip Fatehpur Sikri and see five Agra monuments instead on our Same Day Agra Tour from Delhi.
  • Want the Taj Mahal at dawn? Our Taj Mahal Sunrise Tour reaches the gate as it opens.

Who This Tour Is For

This tour packs three big sites into one day, so it suits some travelers better than others. Here is an honest look at who will enjoy it most.

  • History lovers: You follow the Mughal story from Akbar’s city at Fatehpur Sikri to Shah Jahan’s Taj Mahal in a single day.
  • Short-stay visitors: If you have only one free day in Delhi, this is a way to see three UNESCO World Heritage Sites without a night away.
  • Couples and solo travelers: The car is private, so it is just you, your driver, and your guide if you book one. Solo women travelers get the same private car and a driver who waits at each site.
  • Families with older children: Teens usually enjoy the open courtyards at Fatehpur Sikri. For small children, a 16-hour day with about 9 hours in the car may be too tiring.
  • Older travelers: Expect a lot of walking on uneven stone and some steps at Buland Darwaza. If that sounds hard, the shorter Same Day Agra Tour may be easier.

Best Time for a Fatehpur Sikri Day Trip from Delhi

Weather matters more on this tour than on most. You spend the afternoon on open red sandstone at Fatehpur Sikri, and the stone holds the heat.

  • October to November (best): Warm, dry days of about 28–33°C (82–91°F) and clear roads. This is the easiest time for the full plan.
  • December to January (good, with care): Cool days of about 20–23°C (68–73°F), but mornings and evenings drop near 7°C (45°F). Fog can slow the morning drive, and the early sunset leaves less time at Fatehpur Sikri.
  • February to March (best): Pleasant days of about 25–32°C (77–90°F) and less fog. A good time for photos, with clear skies most days.
  • April to June (hard): Very hot, often 40–45°C (104–113°F). The stone gets hot underfoot, so bring socks, a hat, and plenty of water.
  • July to September (monsoon): Humid days of about 32–35°C (90–95°F) with short, heavy rain. Gardens are green and crowds are thinner, but plan for wet paths.
  • Best time of day and week: This tour reaches the Taj Mahal at mid-morning, which is a fair trade between an early start and crowds. Weekends and Indian holidays bring big crowds, so a weekday (except Friday) is calmer.

How Long Is the Drive from Delhi to Agra and Fatehpur Sikri?

By car, Delhi to Agra takes about 3.5 hours on the Yamuna Expressway, and Fatehpur Sikri is about 1 more hour past Agra. The drive back from Fatehpur Sikri to Delhi takes about 4–4.5 hours.

Trains and buses also run from Delhi to Agra. Here is how they compare for a same-day round trip that includes Fatehpur Sikri.

OptionTime to Agra (one way)ComfortWho it suits
Private carAbout 3.5 hours, plus about 1 hour to Fatehpur SikriDoor to door, AC, stops when you need themGroups and families who want one car for the whole day
Fast trainAbout 2- 3 hoursComfortable seats, fixed timesTravelers happy to book taxis in Agra and keep to a train timetable
BusAbout 4 – 5 hoursBasic, cheapestBudget travelers with flexible plans

Trains are quick between Delhi and Agra, and many travelers enjoy them. The catch on this tour is Fatehpur Sikri: you need a taxi in Agra to get there, and the last good train back limits your time. A private car keeps everything in one ride and waits for you at each site.

Local Tips for Agra and Fatehpur Sikri

Small things can slow you down on a day this long. Each of these tips takes a minute to plan and can save you time later.

  • Stay with your own guide at Fatehpur Sikri: Touts (unofficial “guides” and sellers) often wait at the gate. Stay close to your guide, or give a polite “no thank you” and keep walking.
  • Carry thin socks: Shoes come off in the Jama Masjid area. In summer the stone gets very hot, and socks protect your feet.
  • Bring a light scarf: It is useful for covering your head at Salim Chishti’s tomb, and it keeps the sun off your neck at the Taj Mahal.
  • Save your driver’s number: Cars park away from the gates at all three sites. Before you walk in, agree on where to meet, so you don’t search the parking lot later.
  • Rest between stops: The Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri both mean long walks on stone. Use the car rides to sit back, drink water, and recharge.
  • Pack for cold and warm: In winter, the 6:00 AM start and the 10:00 PM return are cold, while midday is warm. A light jacket and a phone power bank make the day easier.
  • Shopping is always your choice: We never stop at a shop unless you ask. If anyone at a site says you must visit a marble or craft shop, you don’t have to.

FAQ: About the Agra and Fatehpur Sikri Tour

Here are quick answers to common questions about this day. Each answer starts with the short version.

Can I do this tour on a Friday?

No. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, and we do not run a Friday version of this tour. Please pick any day except Friday. Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are open every day, but the whole day is planned around the Taj Mahal.

How long is the Agra Fatehpur Sikri tour from Delhi?

The tour takes about 16 hours, from a 6:00 AM pickup to about a 10:00 PM drop-off. Close to 9 hours of that is driving. You spend about 2.5 hours at the Taj Mahal, 1.5 hours at Agra Fort, and 1.5 hours at Fatehpur Sikri.

How much does the tour cost?

Car-only prices start at ₹7,000 per car for a sedan (1–3 people) and go up to ₹15,500 per car for a Tempo Traveller (7–12 people). Packages with a guide cost ₹7,000 to ₹8,300 per person. Fuel, tolls, taxes, and parking are included in every price.

Are monument entry tickets included?

Only in the Car + Guide + Entry Tickets package and the lunch package. With a car-only or Car + Guide booking, you buy tickets at each gate. Foreign visitors pay a higher fee than Indian visitors, so carry your passport. Your driver shows you where the ticket counters are.

Do I need to pay in advance?

No. There is no advance payment, and you can cancel at any time. You pay on the day of your tour by cash, card, or UPI. Just message us on WhatsApp with your date, group size, and hotel, and we confirm your car and pickup time.

Will the driver take us to shops?

No. We never take you to a shop unless you ask. If you want to buy marble work or souvenirs, tell your driver, and you choose where to go. Nobody will push you to buy anything, and your day stays focused on the three sites.

How is this different from the Same Day Agra Tour?

This tour adds Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km (25 miles) past Agra. To fit it in, it skips Itmad-ud-Daulah, Mehtab Bagh, and Sikandra. The Same Day Agra Tour stays in Agra, covers five monuments, and is a little shorter. Both include the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.

Do I have to take off my shoes at Fatehpur Sikri?

Yes, in the Jama Masjid area. You take your shoes off before you enter and walk barefoot or in socks. Cover your shoulders and knees, and bring a light scarf for your head at Salim Chishti’s tomb. In summer, thin socks protect your feet from hot stone.
